Warhammer 40K Space Marine is a third person shooter / Hack & Slash game developed by Relic Entertainment for Windows, PS3 and Xbox 360 released in 2011. The game is set in the Warhammer 40k universe created by Games Workshop as a tabletop game originally. Recently it was available free on Humble Bundle’s website and I finally picked it up for PC (even though I already have a sealed Xbox 360 version I never got around to playing).
One of the most enjoyable things about this game is going on a Rip & Tear Rampage through a horde of enemies. The challenge never seemed too difficult as you progress steadily through the game, I did die from time to time, but it was not a common occurrence until the end game. The weapons in the game did a good job of representing what you would expect in a Warhammer 40K game.
Unfortunately, the game becomes a little repetitive after a while and the environments fail to vary enough to keep things fresh through the whole game. The health regeneration system also leaves you stranded when enemies are all out of reach and during the end game when there are not enough enemies to melee. My biggest complaint is when you get the Thunder Hammer it seems like the game does not want you to keep using it for long.
The seemingly endless hordes of enemies were a double-edged sword; while very enjoyable, they become repetitive at times. The graphics in game were quite good for a 2011 release and I did not have many issues in game. The environments were immersive and the end game while true to how I see the 40K universe was not how I felt it should have ended.
Overall, the game was quite enjoyable and if Relic were to release a sequel, I would certainly pick it up.
